The Old Bank Gallery / Professional Art Tuition
THE OLD BANK GALLERY Y TABERNACL
The Tabernacle Chapel is one of Llandudno's best loved, listed historic buildings. The schoolroom's use as an art gallery enables the chapel to be kept open for visitors.
It is a perfectly preserved example of a 19th. century Welsh Baptist Chapel, complete with marble baptistry. It was opened in 1875 by the Welsh Nonconformists and was extended in 1902 to incorporate the schoolroom, the Ionic pillared portico and the new main entrance. The Tabernacle was the first in Llandudno to solemnise marriages, had the first resident minister and the first sunday school. Lewis Valentine, a highly influential figure in Welsh cultural and religious life, preached here for 34 years from 1921 to 1955. He was the first president of Plaid Cymru and author of ''Finlandia'' - known by some as Wales's ''second'' anthem!
The Tabernacle, at the corner of Llewellyn Avenue and Upper Mostyn Street, with it's remarkable architecture, history and associations, as well as the art gallery, is worthy of a visit by locals and visitors alike.
